O'Grady was born in Wheaton, Illinois, she graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in the year 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) and Jim O'Grady. She was raised in Wheaton, Illinois, and graduated from Wheaton North High School in 1981. She appeared as a model in commercials for some time before moving out in Los Angeles. Her career started as an actress in commercials and models for Montgomery Ward. She first appeared on the big screen in 1988 with the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was then offered an actress in the recurring role of ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include TV shows in independent film, as well as numerous other roles. Her first major role was in the role of Donna Abandando on the ABC crime series NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the big-haired team secretary of ABC's NYPD Blue from 1993 through the year 1996. Each year, she was awarded Emmy Award nods for Outstanding Actress for a Drama Series.
