O'Neil was a participant in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005 when she was in high school. She was able to make it into the top hundred round when judges applauded her vocal ability. O'Neil was praised highly by the jury. However, she suffered massive losses during the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. Her score was in the bottom three, followed by the in the bottom two. The judges were shocked by the outcome and urged the audience to support singers with impressive singing skills, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the lower three in the future. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, in which O'Neil was able to advance to the final two in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was contacted right away from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her triumph on Canadian Idol.
